Questions –

  1. When did you realize that you wanted to be an author?

I was always a reader, but when an illness left me homebound, I decided to start writing.  Some days were merely a couple of sentences, others would be paragraphs.  It was amazingly therapeutic.

  1. How long does it take for you to write one of your books?

I am asked that often and it is a hard question to answer.  Many times, I’ll have more than one project going or I’ll let a book simmer in my head for several weeks before I’m able to start putting my thoughts on paper.  It also depends on the amount of research necessary for the book.  I work the best under a deadline.

  1. How do you balance your work schedule when you’re busy writing?

I often read of other authors that are able to set a certain schedule for their writing and I’m envious.  I have to be in the right frame of mind for the words to flow.  I wish that I was disciplined enough to go by a regimented schedule, but it simply doesn’t work for me.  It is organized chaos, at best.  Most of my time is spent rolling the story line around in my head, when the writing comes, it goes pretty quickly.

  1. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I write best when it’s raining outside.  I love a good thunderstorm, that’s when I get the most writing done.

  1. How do you come up with ideas for your books?

My novels are always inspired by places, either beautiful, cozy places, or extremely creepy ones.

  1. When did you write your first book?

I wrote my first book in 1999.  It sat on my computer for many years…. oh yeah, and on several ‘floppy disks’.  LOL….

  1. What are your hobbies when you’re not writing?

My husband and I have three retired greyhounds that we got when we became empty nesters.  They keep me company and keep me busy.  I also love traveling to do research on my books, which is often to unconventional places.  I’ve visited morgues, death row, and cemeteries in the middle of the night, just to name a few.

  1. What does your family and close friends think of your writing?

They all seem to like my books, but when you ask about family and friends, you are talking about a group of biases people.  I often get jabs from them about how my mind works with some of my plots, but we have a good time on road trips! My kids are very unimpressed.  I keep telling them how cool I am, but they’re not buying it.

  1. What was one of the most interesting things that you learned about yourself when you published your first book?

I was amazed that someone would actually pay money for something that had been created in my mind.  I felt like a rock star when I got my first royalty check, mind you, it wasn’t enough to buy a mansion.  I did, however, treat myself to an ‘Ove Glove’, the oven mitts ‘as seen on tv’.  I thought they were awfully cool! Hey, money was no object!

  1. How many books have you written? Which one is your favorite?

My sixth novel will be published in January.  I’m working on others and just may have a few hidden away on my computer that I haven’t shared yet.  I have two favorites.  I became very close to the characters in “No Second Chances”.  I cried when I finished that book and had to say good-bye to them all.  “Baby Belle” is the most special to me because it was inspired by a true story, although my book is fictional.  I won’t say too much, because you’ll have to read it for yourself.  But, it is not only special because of Baby Belle, but because of all the wonderful friends that I made along the way as I researched her.

  1. What do you think makes a good story?

Again, I go back to places.  A good story has to be set in an interesting place and have a cast of characters that you both loathe and love.  When I finish either reading or writing a book, I want to feel as though I’ve lived the experience myself.  I want to ride the roller coaster of emotions that the characters do as well.

  1. Where do you like to kick back and write your books?

I love my office, although I’d love to have more space.  My husband is often mortified when he looks in here and always makes sure the door is shut when guests come over! It’s a wreck, but I know where every piece of scrap paper is.  I use wipe off boards and bulletin boards to keep up with characters and my research.  My kids keep telling me, “Mom, put that info in a file on your computer.   It’s so much easier.”  Blah, Blah, Blah.  I’m old school.  If I hear how ‘user friendly’ a phone or computer is one more time, I’m going to scream!
