About Joe –

Joe started his working career as an Engineering Officer in the British Merchant Navy. He came ashore in 1978 and entered the electrical engineering profession, just as the microprocessor boom occurred. An early adopter of the internet, in 1995 he went on vacation to the US, where he married his email friend, making Colorado his home and leaving behind his native Scotland. In 2013 he retired from full-time employment in engineering and decided to move, with his wife, to Northern Italy. During this transition he put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, and produced his first book.

While at sea as a young mariner, Joe studied eastern philosophy in great depth and, when designing computer circuitry, developed an analogy between computer technology and the workings of the conscious mind. His first book, ‘Zan on Zen: Saying “No!” To Negativity’, uses this model as a basis for clearing the mind of harmful thought patterns.

Questions –

1. When did realize that you wanted to be an author?

I started putting my thoughts on paper after I retired from a career in electrical engineering.

2. How long does it take for you to write one of your books?

This book, my first, took around ten weeks to write.

3. How do you balance your work schedule when you’re busy writing?
I started writing after retiring from full-time employment, so the issue did not exist.

4. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I grew up in the UK, so tend to use British expressions, old chap.

5. How do you come up with ideas for your books?

The idea for this book came to me decades ago, when I started learning about computer technology.

6. When did you write your first book?

March 2017

7. What are your hobbies when you’re not writing?

Photography takes up quite a bit of my time, as does reading and walking.

8. What does your family and close friends think of your writing?

They are excited and very supportive, representing some of my first sales

9. What was one of the most interesting things that you learned about yourself when you published your first book?

While writing, I found that, once in the groove, words flowed easily for me. This was not a complete surprise, since I have written poetry from time to time, and observed the same effect. Once the book was published, I found that I was sadly lacking in marketing skills, one of the most important aspects of any enterprise.

10. How many books have you written? Which one is your favorite?
This is my first.

11. What do you think makes a good story?

This is a work of non-fiction, however I read mysteries and thrillers avidly. A good story, in my opinion, is one in which surprise twists are introduced, well into the story.

12. Where do you like to kick back and write your books?

For the last 18 months, my wife and I have split our time between Colorado, Tennessee, Washington and Northern Italy. Although each has been conducive to my writing, Washington state, particularly our “little cabin in the woods”, provided the peace and tranquility that I found extremely helpful in this endeavor.
