Stoneheart

Full Description

Usually, the disclaimer reads along the lines of ‘ripped from the headlines’—Stoneheart, by Baer Charlton, would read the opposite. The headlines keep happening and reinforce what the book is critically pointing out.
On the face, the book is about a third generation marine who is medically discharged with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and must find his way home. The twist is that he has no family, and the Marine Corp is all he has ever known. So now he must discover within himself what makes a place home.
If this sounds like a sad tale, relax; it is about life. It has some sad parts that will make you reach for the tissues, but there are also parts that will put a smile on your face—and make you wish you had bought a second box of tissues. This book is actually a collection of stories that are brought seamlessly together in a powerful single story.
Mr. Charlton brings his own experience of dealing with TBI and PTSD to the character Gunnery Sergeant Perceval Stone. Stone, as well as all of the other characters, are full-bodied and rich in their depictions. There are no stick figures that just get pushed around from page to page. You will remember these characters for years to come—the gunny’s phone and text messaging. Yes, the phone plays as major a part of this book, as it does in each of our lives.
If there is a simple takeaway from this book, it would be how important and powerful friendships can be. There are rarely friendships that are as close to bonding than with those that served together. What Mr. Charlton reminds us is, there are many who serve in so many ways, that are other than in a military uniform.
